Man Mode: Wearing a Suit without a Tie

Yes! It is possible. But you have to take care to pull it off correctly and not look like you just rolled out of bed or spent the night in the drunk tank… And it’s more of a casual take on a suit. Not to say you can’t go tieless in a more formal setting, but be aware of etiquette, say for a wedding. Sorry fella’s.
And everything’s going to need a GREAT fit, be good quality, and have a good pressing.
  1. The first thing to take care of is the shirt… besides a nice fit, look for a stiffer collar. The look is so much nicer and pulled together when the shirt collar can stand on it’s own without the support of a tie. Darker buttons are a must on darker shirts, and then of course, lighter buttons on lighter shirts. You don’t want them to be the focus of attention; sticking out like a sore thumb.
  2. Tailoring should be your best friend. Acres of fabric draping around you is not OK. You want a great fitting suit in a solid or subtle pattern.
  3. Lastly, it’s all about carrying yourself with confidence. If you believe it, you can pull it off.

Style Note: Maximize your tieless look with great accessories: a larger, or ‘busier’ dress watch is a great choice. And now’s the time to play with shoe choice, too: a monk strap or suede, and maybe even consider going sockless if it’s summer! Let your little daredevil out ;).
