Insta-Been Awhile

Since it’s been a while, it’s time for another #whatmelissawore photo dump.

The weather here in So Cal has, for the most part, been very spring-y and gorg, but then it changes just as suddenly as the wind. It’s banana’s y’all with rain one day and then a scorching 85 degrees the next! Needless to say, my wardrobe has been on a roller coaster ride.

A Target run and general errand day after a quick weekend trip to the bay area. Back to reality, but not without an easy style.

Temps dipped back down calling for a bright, but cozy sweater.

Just got my new running shoes, at a very steep discount!

running shoes: Nike Free (similar)

The Bug turned 2 and we were heading for a family celebration. Fun polka dots and peep-toe minty heels! I told y’all I’m in love with mint and have been wearing it from head to toe!

blouse: Anthropologie // jeans: Old Navy (here)

This was the third and final celebration of A’s birthday. And just to be clear, I did take this pic before ironing 😉

top: Target (here// leggings: Old Navy (here// bracelet: Macys (similar), bib necklace: Charlotte Russe (similar)

More mint, y’all! I’m in love. Temps were cooler again and we had a play date and lunch, so I dug out a fun blazer.

top: F21 (here// blazer: Jones New York a few seasons ago (similar) // jeans: Old Navy (similar)
As one day fades to the next, it was super hot (85). I really wanted to wear a bikini, but opted for a flowy tunic!
tunic: {old} and I can’t remember!  // high waisted shorts: F21 (here)// necklace: Target
Nothing says spring like baseball. Actually, I’m more into the beer, peanuts, and hanging with friends, but I like to do it in a casual, cute style.
tank: Anthropologie (here) //  jeans: Old Navy (here) // wood bracelet: I’ve had (similar) // leopard print bangles: I’ve also had hanging around

Another warm day spent at an afternoon BBQ meant tanks and ponytails! It’s feelin’ like summer already.

tank: {older} Abercrombie & Fitch // jeans: Old Navy (here) // bracelet: Macy’s
It was only 6o when I headed out to run errands, but I opted to take a patterned walk on the wild sid. Oh, and I’ve got a smiley stress ball in my hand that A handed to me just before I snapped this. Kind of looks like I’m holding… well, I kind of am! Eek.
blouse: White House Black Market // high waisted shorts: F21 (here) // silver bangles: (here) // large silver bracelet: gift
I told y’all the weather was bananas! 85 degree “summer” days quickly dissolved into low 60s with lots of cloud coverage, and a day at home was filled with playing and baking.
shirt: Old Navy (here) // jeans: American Eagle (here) // shoes: BenSimon (here) // necklace: gift

Back to Warmer Temps… and Shorts

As the week progressed so did our weather. We seriously went from mid 50s and rain on Sunday to mid 70’s Thursday, and mid 80s this past Sunday.

Of course, it never fails that when the weather is gorgeous outside for pictures, the wind gusts are ridiculous.

I got a few decent shots,

but most of ’em we were just trying not to blow away.

For Boston…

I held off posting right away.

There’s always so much speculation when such tragedies occur. Everyone trying to make sense out of the senseless.

This whole thing has been weighing heavy on my heart this entire week.

Reflection has done nothing to sort out the carnage.

I’m new to the running community. A community who, after only one 5k, has left a lasting impression on my mind and my heart.

Running is often thought of as an individual sport. Running against your own times. Achieving your own goals. But the camaraderie. Ah, the camaraderie!

I never felt so much emotion as when I gave birth. Indescribable, I-can-do-this-teary-eyed-joyous-love filled emotion. The day of my first 5k, I was filled with nearly that same emotion.

A crowd of people I’d never met cheered on runners they’d never met, the high-fives handed out along the course, the father running with his son softly encouraging… it gives me chills.

When I opened facebook Monday afternoon and began reading the many posts about the brutal attack at the Boston Marathon I was in shock.

I cried.

My mind wandered to those injured. Those who lost their lives. I immediately began wondering about the hubs cousin who is away at college there (she was fine). I thought about runners, and their families waiting along the finish line to join in triumph over accomplishments. I thought about my own family standing at the finish line the previous weekend awaiting me. I wept.

Race grader and their followers offered a way to show support the following day by wearing a running shirt in honor of Boston, so I did. For Boston. Didn’t seem like much, but it was something I could do all the way across the country.

#RunforBoston was all over twitter, so I did. For Boston.

The past week, I’ve been spending extra time with A just snuggling, running, reflecting, snuggling some more, more running, and lots more snuggling. Because that’s what you do when tragedy strikes. You hold your loved ones tight, you find solace in the usual comforts.

I received a message from an old friend who knew about my running endeavors saying maybe I should stay away from marathons. It was certainly food for thought through all the reflection of this horrific event.

But that’s what the people responsible would wish for, isn’t it? That we retreat. That our spirit be broken, and we hide like the cowards they are.

I learned, with the untimely passing of my dad who was in the wrong place at the wrong time when ran down by a drunk driver, that senseless acts happen. It’s just that. The wrong place at the wrong time. We could live our lives shelled up in our houses. Never step out of our comfort zone. Hide like cowards.

If I learned anything from my first race it’s that those runners aren’t cowards. They’ll hold their heads high. They’ll make it to the finish line on the next race. They’ll never give up.

Lives were lost to see those runners keep going… to the finish line. That finish line there in Boston and beyond.

We will move on. The events will blur, and details be forgotten. What I think we should remember is the courage that swelled there that day. Tragedy will strike, events we can’t always control will happen. Boston solidifies that even though there is evil in this world, there is still so much good, so many good people.

My heart is with you Boston.

Homemade, Clean, Comforting Chicken and Rice Soup

Seriously, y’all, another chicken recipe! And I can almost guarantee you’ll have everything you need for this one also.

This one is my favorite as far as soups go. It’s so comforting for those on again-off again rainy days we’d been having, and who doesn’t love chicken soup? It’s seriously simple, too.

The players:
Chicken breasts (I dice super small pieces so 1 breast does me good, but you could use more if you like it a little more hearty)
1/2 yellow onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp black pepper
2-3 tomatoes, diced*
1 zucchini
1 carrot, diced*
*I used leftover cherry tomatoes and baby carrots from a veggie tray from the 2nd birthday.
box of wild rice (discard/save for later the flavor packet; you won’t need it here)

4 cups of purified water

Putting it all together:
1. In a large pot, combine water, chicken, garlic, onion, bay leaf, and pepper and bring to a boil.

2. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for approximately 2 hours for flavors to infuse.
3. Remove bay leaf and discard.
4. Add all remaining ingredients, recover and allow to simmer for another 30 minutes.
Serve with a little black pepper sprinkled on top.

Mint… {Fashion}

My new favorite color this spring is mint… and I’ve been wearing a lot of it from head to toe.

Here in Cali, we’ve dipped down to low 50s from mid 80 temps and have had several rain days, so it seems I’ve been forced to layer up. It does give me a good excuse to bring out my boots again.

I don’t usually go out with wrinkly clothes and messy hair, but it’s real life, y’all!

After a busy week of birthday prep, I had a restful “me” day Sunday… OK, who are we kidding? I did party clean-up and chores (because the hubs had A all day on a father/daughter hiking adventure) and honestly, ya’ll, I was bored (I know, right?). But cleaning is always so much easier when everyone is away. Am I right?

I did manage to get a mani and a bit of down time, and then the hubs treated me to a dinner out! These were taken at the end of the day just before walking out to that dinner… at 7 p.m.

In other news: I highly recommend the Elephant Bar’s gluten free shrimp soup with salmon. YUM!
