Here in so. Cal, we’re still in the thick of summer mid-August and when high temps last well into late September/early October, it feels like fall will never get here.
This year, I was really hoping that since we’d been experiencing temps in the high 80s in August we’d have a mild summer and just breeze right into fall – my favorite season. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’ll be the case. Welcome to 100º+ temps, sweating, and MELTING MAKEUP?
Not to worry. You don’t have to be a victim of melting makeup. There are a few tips and tricks that’ll help with those sweltering hot days and keep your makeup looking as fresh as the moment you put it on. So let’s get started, shall we?
Whether it be summertime or winter, before you even think about putting on makeup, a good cleanser is essential and should be your first line of defense. Keeping oils at bay will help your makeup stay put. No one wants their makeup sliding right off their face!

I’m often ‘in love’ with different beauty products at different times, but I’m currently loving Neutrogena‘s deep clean gentle scrub.
For summer months, I think the key ingredient to fresh, sun-kissed, melt-free makeup is to go lighter. Don’t over apply. Use just where you need it, and if possible, even avoid foundation altogether. I know for some, that’s just not feasible. I get it, believe me! So just try to stick with a coverup,
or light or sheer foundation, in the places you need it. A lightweight, oil free formula will do the trick. I personally like Clinique’s Super Balanced line.
Clinique actually discontinued the concealer I used religiously for my pesky under eye circles a few years back, but I’ve found their compact make-up (seen below) works well for me just under my eyes. And if I feel like I need a little overall coverage, I use the liquid super balanced bottle (pictured).

I used a little more of the compact make up than normal so you could really see what I was trying to do. Just a little dab under the eye goes a long way. |

At this point, all I have on is the compact make up UNDER MY EYES ONLY, and I did go WITHOUT any additional all-over foundation. I also used the compact makeup on my lips (read on to see why!) |
If you’re in the ‘I can’t go without my foundation’ camp, set your light or sheer foundation with translucent powder.
Personally, I use the one on the right on top of my under eye coverage and if I do choose to use overall foundation, I also use that powder all over (eyes and eyelashes, too). After I’ve put my eyes on, used a little bronzer and blush, I lightly blot on the powder seen on the left to set everything.
For the eyes, a shadow primer will help keep your shadow in place and crease-free. When applying shadow, choose a cream or pressed powder in your favorite shade. I like these shades in Revlon’s cream, but I go back and forth between cream and powders.
Water resistant mascara is a must along with a pencil or liquid eyeliner.

I kept my liner VERY minimal to illustrate the ‘light and fresh’ idea. |
Keep your lipstick in place by first applying foundation to your lips to create a smooth base inwhich to ‘stick’ the lipstick.
Your finished look should be light and fresh. For evening, you can add a little more eyeliner (a cat eye is always striking) and a lash lengthening mascara for a little volume or even extensions. My lips go either way. Somedays I like them a little muted, others bold (depending on mood, occasion, and outfit), but I generally opt for something striking in the evenings. The possibilities are endless!
This was the finished product for a day look last week.
One final tip to keep your makeup fresh throughout the day and fight any oil is blotting papers. Blotting papers work great to soak up any extra oil, and you won’t need touch ups of makeup during the day.
Hope these tips help keep you putting your best face forward… even in the hottest, muggiest days of summer.
