Hey there gents! Welcome back to this week’s Man Mode. Today, we’re chattin’ about how to pull off cardigans if you’re a larger guy.
I style a wide variety of clients… and I’m always guiding clients to feel confident and love who they are; no matter what size or shape.
I often find, though, that my larger guys shy away from cardigans/pullovers, believing them to be too ‘clingy.’ They feel like they’re drawing attention to those areas they’d rather not, when in fact, you can flatter your figure. Often, they believe the baggier the clothing {think a sack}, the more they’re detracting attention from their decidedly unpleasing qualities. In all actuality, by pulling on a ‘sack,’ they’re drawing more attention. People are intrigued what’s under there… what they’re hiding.
So let’s get to it, shall we?
It is possible to wear a cardigan/pullover without it ‘clinging’ to those unwanted areas, and yet look perfectly styled and professional.
Everyone can pull off a cardigan {or pullover} by following these few hints:
- Choose a solid print/color. Though busy prints can work, they’re a bit more tricky.
- Stick to neutral color palettes: brown, black, navy, grey. You may try out a burgundy for this year’s color of the year trend ;), but keep in mind, colors will suggest themselves naturally, so go with what makes you feel confident!
- Opt for lighter fabrics like merino or lamb’s wool. Keep clear of heavier, bulky fabrics like rib knits; those tend to add too much bulk, which we’re trying to stay away from.
- This is probably thee most important tip to avoid a clingy sweater: choose a piece that skims your body and smooths out it’s surface.
Now, go out there and add a great cardigan to your wardrobe!
