Winterize Your Wardrobe… Without a Heavy Coat

Style Note: great layers will winterize your look in minutes.

Easy does it when it comes to winter dressing in so Cal. It’s chilly enough to pull on layers, but generally still warm enough that you don’t always need a coat.
I don’t know about you, but when winter hits, I want to winterize my wardrobe even if the lovely so Cal weather isn’t quite cooperating.
So then, if you’re wondering how to winterize your look without wearing a coat, it’s really quite easy. It’s all about choosing great layers and fun pieces.

The cape is a fantastic piece, and though it’s a bit warmer than pulling on a sweater, I wouldn’t say it’s a full-blown coat! And I paired mine with a short sleeve top to keep the layering simple and not overly warm when the temps are only in the low 50s.

Leather {faux} is another great piece: chic AND warm. Here, I’m sporting leather x2… great faux leather leggings and gloves. And the gloves double as sleeves since I opted for a short sleeve top.

I do love me a great dress or skirt as well and you shouldn’t have to hide them away until spring, so you can easily add layers with those too… tights are the perfect winterizing piece!
My top 6 pieces to winterize a look are:
cape- sophisticate your look or go casual chic with this hot item! It’s perfect over a long sleeve blouse to really dress up your wardrobe or paired with a long sleeve tee or turtle neck to keep it cas.
faux fur: vest or stole- A stole especially can be worn alone over a pullover or added to a lighter coat or sweater for warmth and added interest to a look.
sleeveless sweater- a superb layering piece without bulk. Layers well under another vest or light coat/sweater. I love a sleeveless turtle neck!
chunky knit- perfect alone with a great pair of jeans.
leather- whether it be pants, a jacket, or gloves, stay chic and warm! And you can opt for faux or vegan.
blanket scarf- easily accessorizes and winterizes any outfit

Playin’ with Texture and Prints

Style Note: The key to mixing prints? It’s pretty simple… by sticking to base colors you can mix virtually anything. Once you get the hang of it you can go bolder, but if you’re just starting to play with prints, you can’t go wrong by staying in the same color family.

blouse c/o // skirt c/o // similar jacket // necklace // rings c/o // crossbody // booties

I’m a huge fan of staple pieces that mix-and-match across a wardrobe, but I love adding interest to the basics; making them unique to each individual’s style.
Take this skirt for instance. Just the bit of texture and fun, flirty cut take a staple black skirt and give it so much intrigue. It’s still perfect for the office, but stays true to my style. Adding the leather just boosts the ‘cool’ factor!
And I love playing with prints: floral and snakeskin, in this case.
Here’s to amping up your week with some fun prints and textures!

Blackout… in the Rain!

my outfit: coat // dress // bag {sold out; similar} // necklace c/o // rain boots
amélia’s outfit: vest via {similar} // similar dress // booties

I love the rain, almost as much as I love the leaves turning brown and sweaters and jeans.
In so Cal, we’ve been rather unlucky with the rain, and drought conditions have us all longing for more any. When we finally got some last week, my style kick and I dusted off our rain boots and went puddle stomping between errands and appointments. She ditched hers shortly after the rain stopped, but me? I wore them. ALL DAY. for errands and even a style appointment…  Hey, when a girl gets a chance to bust out rain boots in an area that rarely sees rain, she does!

The wind and weather even made it comfortable for a coat! You bet I got all excited about fall, only to have it dangled in front of me for 3 glorious days… and then, just like that, it was over :(.

Style Note: Don’t be afraid to dress up your rain boots. You can pair them with a dress and coat for a super chic office look. The secret? Keep it neutral and add bits of interest, like a leather dress, stripes, or an awesome piece or two of statement jewelry. You’re look will remain professional and functional.

Pre-Fall Fab

{all pieces are from previous seasons so I’m linking similar items}
tee // similar shorts // booties // leather jacket // vintage bag {similar here}

100 degrees isn’t stopping me from thinking of fall… Ok, more like dreaming of it because it’s so damn hot!

This, however, is pre-fall fab; the perfect combo for the southern California 100 degree desert and a yearning to don fall clothing. You may shy away from longer sleeves, and I normally would too, but I couldn’t resist… and a lightweight cotton really isn’t so bad. And as the temperatures start to taper off {it’ll happen eventually!}, you can mix summer staples with fall pieces.
This outfit combines some great transitional pieces, staples, and fall trends, is chic enough for keeping me feeling pulled together, comfortable enough for a day with my daughter, and just the right amount of edge for a dinner out.
I took a cue from one of my favorite designers, Marissa Webb, for the color combo: olive and cobalt. The olive gives a sense of fall, but the cobalt infuses just the right amount of vibrance. Stripes are always a staple and I love the little gold detailing; somehow, I feel like I don’t need any jewels for this outfit. The shorts are a life saver in this summer heat and the booties, a bit edgy, but so comfy, are perfect for heading into fall.
It’s worth mentioning that this entire outfit was created out of pieces from my previous season’s wardrobe … once again proving that you can invest in pieces and wear them from season to season!
Style Note: Create your fashion cocktail with a stand out color + a complimentary color and a little bit of rocker edge.
I’ve got a little video coming, that if you follow on snapchat {havenstreet}, I hinted at. It’ll be a sneak peek at some of my favorite pieces for this fall… stay tuned!

Alright, back to this look… If you follow on IG, you know I spent some time in New York where we got all gussied up and spent some time in the art museums.
I loved this outfit because it incorporates a few of my favorite things: classic black and white, and chic, current style.

Style Note: whenever traveling, black and white layers are my secret for chilly to warm weather without overpacking. Incorporate leather for a chic, current style.

#STRAIGHTHAIRDONTCARE

I Spent last week in NYC. You guys know, I love that city! I could live there. Anyhow, we flew out on a redeye which put us in the city early Easter Sunday morning. Um yeah, I’ve flown at all different times, but the best is arriving late just in time for bed! So red eyed, in the clothes I flew with, and with straight hair fresh out of a side braid, we hit the town.

Mountain Romp

We were lucky enough to get some time away last weekend and spend it in the beautiful mountains. It seems impossible to escape the wind though *insert giant, frustrated, sad face* I despise the wind and it is NOT helpful for capturing nice photos. Anywho… We spent a great time with family just relaxing and enjoying the scenery! Hope your week has been great…
