DIY Chalkboard Ornaments Place Settings

Somedays I think if I could chalkboard paint the entire house, I WOULD!
I’m so in lalalove with chalkboard paint, and yet this was THE first time I’ve ever used it.
Yep! First. time.
So, basically the hubs and I were hosting Christmas breakfast and the molly homemaker within took over. I mean, my eyes probably glazed over and anyone within a mile from me could most likely hear my wheels turnin’. Good time for the hubs to be out of town! He might have thought I’d gone off the deep end.
Anyway, back to hosting breakfast… I envisioned a beautiful, inviting table with winter-warmth (if that’s such a thing… I mean, we all know winter is cold… but then again, I live in So Cal). I digress.
With white and blue Portuguese-made dinnerware, I decided I’d go with silver and a beautiful shade of sky, ahem winter blue.
Yep, shopping trip!
I picked up beautiful soft sparkly blue placemats for 50% off! – yeah, that’s how I roll *wink* – and I found silver cloth napkins… you guessed it, also 50% off! The hubs will LOVE that.
BUT, you can’t have a beautifully dressed table without beautiful place settings! At least in my vision, I couldn’t. I decided Saturday I needed place settings, and chalkboard ornaments were the classiest to top off my table.
Here’s the DIY chalkboard ornament place settings I promised
What you’ll need:
chalkboard paint (I used one by Martha Stewart)
paper to cover dining room table (or a craft space… I can only dream!)
Bigger-sized paintbrush
ornaments (any would work, but I chose small round bulbs)
and popsicle sticks (or something to help hold the ornaments while you paint)
What you’ll do:
1. Remove the tab that the ornament hangs from.
2. Place bulb on popsicle stick (it will spin around, but patience is key… I found tilting the stick slightly helped as I didn’t want to touch the ornament and risk smudging the paint).
3. Put on one coat of paint and allow to dry for at least one hour. I highly recommend placing the stick with the ornament on a styrofoam board, but since I hadn’t really thought ahead (this was a last minute project) I cut slits in a sponge and it did a fairly good job.
4. After you’ve allowed the first coat to dry, put on a second. You’ll want to do this second coat to be sure it evenly covers.
5. Place the hangers back on your ornaments and add the frills (names in chalk, ribbons, etc…

Other than the hour it takes to dry, this project seriously only took me maybe an hour of hands-on time. And they added just the right touch to my breakfast table setting!

I think I may be doing these next year for gift tags!

Happy DIYing!
